AI can offer many benefits to a student's learning, including idea generation, personalized learning and faster research. When students are stuck on something, AI can help brainstorm ideas and give starting points for projects. AI adjusts explanations or examples to match students' learning style and their pace. AI quickly gathers information, which saves students time when working on assignments.
As stated by Harvard Graduate School of Education, “But while academic integrity remains a concern for both adults and teens alike, many study participants highlighted positive academic experiences they’ve had with generative AI. AI was called ‘the modern approach to learning’, while other teens surveyed pointed out that “not all kids use it to cheat in school.” However, students using AI all the time for every assignment could lead to a student's critical thinking reduced, academic dishonesty and lack of learning. Assignments are meant to help students think and solve problems.
Overusing AI weakens their critical thinking because AI does the thinking for them.If students turn in AI- generated work as their own, it's sometimes considered as cheating, which could lead to punitive action. When a student relies on AI to do all their work, they don't learn or practice the skills they are supposed to gain from the assignments. According to “What do AI chatbots really mean for students and cheating?” by Stanford University, “The launch of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots has triggered an alarm for many educators, who worry about students using the technology to cheat by passing its writing off as their own.” “Im very concerned about students using AI in school because students don't know how to use AI appropriately. They can find the answer quickly, rather than putting effort which is not good for the student and might reduce their critical thinking” Varinder Kaur (JFK teacher) said, a resource teacher at John F. Kennedy High School. Kaur goes on to say, “Academic honesty is really important, and that's what the kids need to understand."
They need to do their own work. If students copy then I think that is completely plagiarism. I consider using AI as cheating”.
Sahrish Khan (09), says, “I think AI can be used for some good things and bad things. I think students nowadays use AI to cheat, but in my case, I think a lot of people use AI for inspiration and help them learn. I really like to use it [AI] to study.”
Amy Chen (09), disagrees, saying, “I think students should not use AI in school because it could affect their performance in school and decrease their intelligence if they rely on AI all the time.”
In conclusion, AI can be a helpful tool for students when used the right way. It can help with coming up with ideas, learning at your own pace, and finding information faster. But if students rely too much on AI or use it to cheat, it can hurt their ability to think on their own and cause problems with honesty. Teachers and students need clear rules to make sure AI is used to support learning, not replace hard work. When used carefully, AI can improve how students learn and understand their work.
