Kennedy High School recently welcomed Melissa “Mel” Banuelos Velazquez, a new staff member who joined this fall to work closely with students in the Wellness Center. Velazquez brings both experience and enthusiasm, with the goal of supporting students academically and emotionally.

Velazquez explained that her decision to come to Kennedy was influenced by her passion for working with high school students and her Level One List Coach certification. “I saw that Kennedy has a Wellness Center, so I really wanted to be part of that,” she said.

Her first month on campus has been, in her words, “really fun.” She noted that while she has enjoyed meeting both staff and faculty, her favorite part so far has been connecting with Kennedy students. Outside of her professional role, she enjoys attending concerts and running marathons, two interests that keep her busy beyond the classroom. Looking ahead, Banuelos Velazquez shared her excitement about the year: “I’m really excited to see the seniors I’ve met graduate.” She also offered advice for students navigating the challenges of high school. “If you ever feel overwhelmed or feel like high school is too much, always ask someone for advice, or go up to someone and tell them that you’re feeling overwhelmed, because we’re here to help you.”
