On May 9, Kevin Lydon and John Byon became new athletic directors.
This is their first year being athletic directors after Mcgaughey retired. Athletic directors are in charge of hiring coaches for a team, managing budget, ensuring rules and many more.
Lydon has been involved in sports since his high school and college years. Lydon went to Ohlone then got a scholarship to the University of New Mexico for baseball. Later on, he was offered this position by McGaughey and both Lydon and Byon agreed.
Their goal in the program is to make sports inviting and to make their program successful with students. What we can expect this year is things to be organized, fundraising, to be inclusive and for everyone to be active with sports.
What's been easy for them while in the program is when hanging out with students and talking to them. But when it comes to the harder part, it is when being realistic. Some students have these expectations and they have these big goals that are unrealistic, and it's difficult to tell them about facing reality and having to bring down their confidence.
When it comes to having this job, Lydon says “Doing this job every day until I retire, I love everything about this job”.
When asked “if there was anything they wanted to change, what would it be?”
Lydon said, “…having better funding and having the money to help the kids in their sports.” Compared to other schools, JFK High School has the lowest funding out of all of the Fremont Unified Shool Districts, which makes the engagement less prominent and more difficult to manage as compared to other schools.
Lydon and Byon had overall a great experience while in the program. They specifically enjoy hanging out with the kids, playing sports and many more fun experiences.
