On the evening of Oct. 24, students, staff, and their families gathered for the annual Fall Fest at John F. Kennedy High School. The event is known for its games, food, and performances, drawing large crowds.
The festival was organized by ASB, the Associated Student Body, to provide opportunities for clubs to fundraise by running booths and bringing the school community together.
Armando De Jesus Dominguez Martinez (12), is a member of ASB who helped organize the event.
“This is my first year coming here as a senior, and I think it’s a very amazing place,” remarked Martinez. “I’m in ASB, so I was helping behind the scenes and just seeing it all come together and alive at the end, just really makes it a nice environment for everyone.”
Each club had their own creative take on their booth’s activity to fundraise, ranging from carnival games to food to jewelry.
Aarna Gupta, (11), from the Model UN Club described how she felt that Fall Fest was a perfect way to interact with the community and to help clubs bring in money.
“...people come out and support the clubs and the clubs are able to fundraise a lot. Everyone just has a fun time while supporting the school at the same time,” stated Gupta.
Dasarae Balaba (10), who ran the Guitar Club booth, had similar thoughts about raising money at Fall Fest.
“...it’s nice to be able to share interests with people and sell stuff and make money for the club,” commented Balaba.
These clubs would put the money earned from the event towards programs and competitions that they participate in..
“We [Biology Club] wanted to have a fun carnival game as well as sell to make money for the Biolympiad [Competition],” explained Elise Roman (12)
Along with club booths, Fall Fest also had a variety of performances featuring different clubs, the school band, and a special indigenous group.
Matt Lim (10, a member of the band, described how he feels when performing.
“A lot of stuff is happening, so I just try to focus and think about the music,” said Lim.
Lim also mentioned that performing at these events creates a sense of unity between performers.
“I think music can bring our community together. The love and enjoyment of music is what brings us as musicians together,” explained Lim.
Martinez said watching the band perform was one of the highlights of his night.
“I watched the student band, and to be honest, they were wonderful. I think they are very excellent and have some great talent,” commented Martinez.
Many students also noted that the festivities and welcoming atmosphere enhanced the uniqueness of the evening.
“It’s really nice to see everyone come here after school. The fall theme is really nice, the games are fun, the food’s good, and the performances are cool to watch,” said Gupta.
“It’s definitely on theme. It looks really nice and people have decorated it really well. I think it’s bringing people together,” remarked Roman.
JFK’s Fall Fest was a night of fun and festivities that also brought the school and community together, an event that Martinez thinks “has helped [school spirit and community] and will continue to [do so] over the years.”
