On Aug. 15, John F. Kennedy High School’s cheerleaders were invited to perform at the grand opening of the new Angry Chickz located in Fremont at 39338 Paseo Padre Pkwy. The event was organized by Crystina Lee, the Angry Chickz franchise publicist. At around 10 AM, the cheerleaders practiced and performed two separate cheers for spectators at the event.
“It was a very big opportunity and I was really appreciative that I had the chance to participate,” said Luna Rodriguez (10), one of the members of the John F. Kennedy cheerleading squad. She was glad she got to experience this event and had a lot of fun.
The cheer leading performance enabled the team to bond with each other as well as practice new moves ahead of the upcoming JFK football season. In response to the performance, Angry Chickz franchise owner rewarded the cheer leading squad with free lunch and a $500 donation which was aimed at supporting the group and their ability to successfully perform in the future. Aniyiah Booker-Gross(11), another member of the cheer leading squad, stated: “ I think we as a team are severely underfunded at times making attending all events/competitions very expensive. However this fundraiser has been immensely helpful, and with these new funds we hope for it to be helped towards the price of uniforms. I believe we, as a cheer team, should hold more fundraisers to support our ventures."
Events such as these are extremely beneficial to the cheer team as it enables the team to bond and grow relationships outside of the classroom while also getting a chance to practice their new cheers and dance moves in front of a live crowd. Additionally, the money received from fundraisers go a long way in supporting the cheer teams by helping pay for expensive uniforms ( often up to a cost of $1000) and paying for competition logistics. The idea of fundraising is a strong point, making these events and teams come together is not cheap. These fundraisers would help pay for their expensive uniforms and far away competitions. The event had various performances going on and was fun to attend.
Mr. Tagami, a teacher at Kennedy as well as the advisor for the team says, “They were at the event for 2 hours and were able to watch Washington High School perform two songs, did their own two cheers and also did a raffle for 6 tickets.”
The raffle included jerseys, tshirts, and merchandise showing the contributions Angry Chickz made. The new cheer was learned at camp and took a couple days for the routine to be memorized.
Booker-Gross goes on to express the fun she had, “The best part of the event was going with my teammates that I have known for three years. We all are really close and it was really fun to be there with them.”
Mr. Tagami the advisor for the cheerleaders goes on to say, “JFK did really well and pumped the crowd up very well.”
The team was enthusiastic and powered to be able to do something big for a new opening. If anyone is interested in supporting the JFK cheer team you can contact the advisor, Mr. Tagami at Mtagami@fusdk12.net.
