With their hard-fought season coming to a close, players from the John F. Kennedy High School Boys Basketball team reflect on their experiences and performances over the past year.
The team had a strong run this season, winning nearly half of the twenty-five games they played.
Varsity captain Evan Shoulders (12) commented on the team’s performance, “We are doing well right now. We are winning most of our games.”
Despite the overall success of the boys basketball team, the team still experienced ups and downs as the season progressed.
Ryan Guha (12), another varsity player, gave an example of the struggles. Guha said, “We had a five game losing streak. That was our biggest challenge of the season.”
Shoulders added, “The biggest challenge for our team is staying consistent. Sometimes we play good for one game, and then we mess up the next game."
The boys basketball team worked hard to keep improving after each game to achieve success in spite of the challenges.
“I am most proud that we were able to turn around the five game losing streak,” continues Guha. “We were able to secure a playoff spot because of that. We have won two tournaments and are continuing to grow as a team.”
“One of the most positive moments from the season was winning against American High School at their court. The crowd was active and obnoxious, but we still beat them,” said Shoulders.
One reason the players attribute to their success is their improved team dynamic and mentality this season.
Guha states, “We try to always be optimistic. We were really pessimistic last year, and that's why we played poorly. We try to lift everyone up, and now we are a good basketball team.”
Shoulders adds on to this sentiment: “We are all really close, and we hang out after practice a lot. During practice, we are still very competitive so we push one another to become better basketball players.”
Dane Savage (12), another varsity captain, states, “The team dynamic is great; it’s the best since my four years of being here. Going into games with joy and the bond of how close we are as a team really sticks out. We always pick one another up when they are down and give them their flowers when they are deserved.”
Even though the season is coming to a close, the team still has more ahead of them.
Shoulders says, “I want to win a few games in the playoffs as I continue to contribute to the team.”
Guha concurs, “I’m excited for the run we’re about to make in the playoffs. We want to surprise a lot of teams there.”
