With homecoming being one of the few schoolwide dance events of the year, the decoration, music, and, most importantly, the theme is often a topic of debate among students.

The majority of the students agreed that the theme was a great choice and were excited to go to the dance. In a survey, 61.8 percent of the students interviewed liked the theme while the other 38.2 percent disliked it.

The students who liked the theme found it interesting and said it relates to their own interests.

Arianna Padrique (11), agreed with the majority saying, “I really like the Hoco theme for this year because it's different compared to previous themes.” She also added, “It’s set in a specific country, Greece, and it’s so beautiful. I always see TikToks about Greece on social media and it’s cool how they incorporated that into the theme for this year.”

However, other students view the theme as a small part of homecoming and find it doesn’t affect their experience at the dance.

Deagan Neesham (11), expressed his opinion by saying, “I don't really care for the theme, people just show up unaligned with it.”

ASB is in charge of picking the homecoming theme, something which they take great care in. They are aware of the theme’s importance and how it is intended to unify students. Despite the students who are indifferent about the theme, ASB is still dedicated to ensuring the theme amplifies the experience.

Kaylee Montalvo (12), an ASB student, explains, “The theme is important because it brings people together.” In addition, she said “it’s a helpful baseline for decor.”

This year, ASB decorated with custom-made pillars, teachers’ names with Greek lettering on the doors, and drawings of Greek gods. They also added hanging flowers and lanterns contributing to the ambiance of the night. However, despite the decorations, only two people dressed up to match the theme.

The theme was thoroughly debated amongst the student body to please all, but some still disliked it, saying that the theme was too foreign, confusing, or hard to style.

Ms. Thomas, science teacher, says, “I’ve been to Greece and I still don’t know how I would dress up for the theme. I don’t get how that would inspire outfits”

Her opinion is reflected in a multitude of survey responses, in which students wondered how the theme should be executed and its relevance.

Homecoming themes often receive mixed feedback from students, and ASB aims to choose themes that appeal to a wide range of students. For years now, it has united the school, bringing a common ground for students; along with setting a theme to ensure the decor is uniform. Students’ feedback on this year’s theme will shape future homecomings, so students are encouraged to share their perspective.
